Hawks win Goal Grabbers 6 a side Tournament
See the Hawks in the News Shopper, p23 (August 15th)!. The Hawks took a short break from their close season rest to take part in this annual event at Goals in Elmers End. It was a round-robin tournament consisting of three teams. Ourselves along with Chislehurst Wanderers and Darwin. The first round of games, scheduled at 30 minutes, went fantastically well for the Hawks, who got off to a flying start with a 12-1 victory against Darwin. The rule of not stepping inside either penalty area was proving a problem getting used to, with half our goals coming from penalties. We gave away three, but only one was converted, with Rhys in fine form once again between the sticks!
The goals were still flying in though and we headed in to our next game against Chislehurst Wanderers high on confidence. Once again we set about our jobs brilliantly, playing at a high tempo despite the blistering heat. Our forward players were finishing superbly with Owen in fine form putting his name next to five of our ten goals! A 10-0 victory and a clean sheet! Things couldn’t have been going much better.
The second round of games were just six minutes each way. The important thing now was to ensure the boys didn’t get too over confident and a little complacent. With the shorter games there was no time to mess about. We took on Darwin for a second time and had a fantastic 8-2 victory. The strength we have throughout the squad was evident with five of the boys getting on the score sheet!
With Chislehurst Wanderers getting the better of Darwin in their games it was a forgone conclusion before our final game that we were going to finish top and Chislehurst second and so play out the final.
We didn’t start well going one behind through yet again a penalty. It was from here though that we produced some of our best football of the day! We started to make the ball do the work and were switching the play really well opening up Chislehurst coming through as 4-1 winners and champions once again! All the boys received a medal and certificate as well as the overall
winners trophy! There was also an award for player of the tournament which the referee of our games decided should go to Hong. It is fantastic he has got a reward for some brilliant performances, not just on Saturday but all year.
Saturdays performance was excellent scoring 34 goals in the four games, only conceding four all of which were penalties, showing the strength of the team as a defensive unit! This being still without Mehmet and Aaron, who are both away on holiday, so things are looking incredibly promising and everyone now is eagerly awaiting the release of the fixtures for next season! (report by Andy)
Team – Rhys, Ed (2), Matias, Liam (1), Spencer (8), Hong (8), Jamie (4), Owen (11)
Croydon Juniors Tournament, Sunday 1st July 2007. Hawks crowned Champions!
The Hawks finally crushed their penalty hoodo on Sunday to clinch their first trophy. Four straight wins had put the Hawks top of their group and shot them into the Quarterfinals where they met Palace Guard. A goal in each half from Jamie and Spencer was enough to see us into the Semi's and a game against Croydon Juniors B who they had beaten in the group stages. A very tight game with few chance saw the match go all the way to the dreaded penalty shoot out for a place in the final. The Hawks put their previous penalty heartbreak behind them and both Owen and Spencer calmly scored and the Hawks were in the final. In the final we once again came up against JEFC who we had played in a friendly the previous week so both sets of boys knew each other well. The game was a great spectacle for the big crowd and either team could have snatched it but it wasn't to be and it was penalties yet again. JEFC were first up and a great save from Rhys set the Hawks on their way. Owen scored his and after some high drama when both teams missed their chance it was up to Mehmet to blast his shoot in and seal the Hawks first ever triumph.
